26 Stories of Family Arts

Aberystwyth Arts Centre Gallery
TEULU / FAMILY exhibition

Best Family Arts Activity Winner

“Incredible! Such a great idea. Wonderful to see the choice of artworks through a child’s viewpoint. An innovative concept, and an amazing outcome. One of the best exhibitions I’ve seen in a long time.” – Audience Member

TEULU / FAMILY is a project that puts the public at the heart of decision making at Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

The families involved had the opportunity to curate their own exhibition by choosing works from their national collections of art. They participated in free workshops and gallery visits to view the collections at National Museum Wales, National Library Wales and the Aberystwyth School of Art, and they created their own ceramics and animation works in response that were exhibited alongside works by famous artists such as Pablo Picasso, Ceri Richards and Mary Lloyd Jones.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre found collaborating with families informative and it will inspire them to consider the needs of families in future exhibitions.

Aberystwyth Arts Centre is one of Wales’ largest and best-known venues, presenting a broad arts and engagement programme throughout the year. They bring together their communities with the very best arts experiences, right on their doorstep.

They know how important it is to provide a regular programme of work for young audiences and families that everyone can enjoy. Aberystwyth Arts Centre have a varied programme of live shows – everything from dinosaur spectaculars and science shows to stage versions of popular children’s books, in both Welsh and English. They offer lots of family friendly films, including parent and baby screenings, and have recently worked hard to develop engagement opportunities for families with their visual arts exhibitions.   They also offer a huge range of creative learning opportunities for young people – starting with sessions for parent and babies such as Baby Ballet, then for every stage of a young person’s development – through dance classes, Stage School, Youth Theatre, animation, pottery and more.
